Reviewing the six 8x4 trucks, it is obvious that the Scania is more the roadgoing type, but as we have mentioned, this brand also offers a truck with better all-terrain capabilities.
Our opinion is that the MAN and the DAF fought hard for first place, but considering the road behaviour and the suspension, the MAN comes out on top.
These two are directly followed by the maybe-toocomfy and heavy Mercedes-Benz. Maybe the lighter Axor, with it's smaller cab, is the better choice for this line of work?
The Iveco impressed as a basic vehicle that does the job rather well. We all loved its magnificent sound, the easy steering and the old-fashioned double-H shift pattern gearbox. The same goes for the Volvo FM, which had the smallest engine output, but performed very strongly off-road.
The FM proves how important the layout of the driveline is in this sector. The DAF, MAN and, to a little lesser extent, the Actros showed that automated gearboxes understand their job well in off-road circumstances. But we also learned why drivers prefer manual shifting, and the desire and need to keep things under control. The Scania, at least, is not the best in all off-road jobs, but it remains the King of the Road. On asphalt, that is... •
