I was concerned to see that Janus (CM September 28) publicized a statement by Stefan Tietz on motorway lane capacity. In fact the number of British Rail-type freight trains equivalent to B hours' lane capacity is about 250, far more than BR could get along a rail track in that time. If he was talking about American-type trains he might be nearer the mark, but mashalling that sort of train requires freight yards up to 10 miles long and a mile wide. Is this really what the environmentalists want?
At the FTA conference Richard Marsh was bumbling on about freight over 50 miles going by rail. It really is too childish. The figure is nearer 300 miles for bulk freight, for merchandise freight much greater, else why do lorries come from places like Bulgaria? ANGUS DALGLEISH, Chertsey, Surrey.
