I drive a light commercial vehicle but even so get very annoyed at people who slate hgv drivers and their vehicles. Is there nothing we can do to support the lorry driver?
Just look at the historical position. When the first power-driven vehicle appeared on the road in, I think, 1769, people looked upon it as a dangerous monster. About a century later the British Government brought in the "Red Flag Act-. Now, in the 1970s we have millions of cars and lorries on our roads and people have learned to live with them. But suddenly, a supposed new danger has appeared, commonly known as "the juggernaut", and there are both British and Continental versions. But can anyone imagine some of the loads which are now taken by road being transported by train or barge?
Also there is this business which has cropped up recently of banning lorries from the centre of London and various towns. The fact is that ordinary people — councillors and Young Liberals included — do not know the first thing about lorry driving and our rules and regulations, or those of the EEC, and maintenance requirements. Agreed, quite often lorries do use short cuts through villages to try to save time — I know 1 do myself.
A WOULD-BE HGV DRIVER, (Name and address supplied).
