'Hitting the €2bn barrier'
Schmitz built 36,000 new vehicles last year and 20,000 axles, boosting its turnover by 10% to El ,308bn.
Yet board chairman Bernd Hoffmann believes that the EU economy is still being slowed by general transport shortages caused by lengthy lead times, especially for reefers and cargo trailers.
By 2010 he fully expects Schmitz's nine factories to be building 80,000 units a year. By that time we will have passed the €2bn barrier he adds.
Schmitz is also offering new telematics systems (one is an upgrade for reefer use); a new GPRS pricing structure; and (through Bosch) an integrated security package.
Then there is the latest SOS mega-trailer with dual ride height and roof adjustment with an on-line option for future road/rail use.
The necessary extra equipment can be factoryfitted or supplied as a bolt-on kit that adds just 200kg and ensures proper body height and rail speed codification.
