BRITAIN'S commercial vehicle industry is strongly -epresented in this year's Deign Council awards. Six manufacturers have been ;elected: Quinton Hazel', Lay • :.ock Engineering, Motor Panels, Vauxhall, Britax and Boalloy.
Quinton Hazel! Automotive )f Colwyn Bay has won an iward for the energyibsorbing under-run bumper vhich progressively controls he impact of a car in a rearnd collision. The company ecently received the AA's ;old Award for Safety.
Laycock Engineering eceived an award for its flotobalance 5000 wheel alancer. Although it is a echnically sophisticated iachine, Laycock claims that n operator needs only minium training to balance road wheels properly. The complete operation, including the placing of the balance weights, is said to take only a few minutes.
The MP Standard Panel Concept has won an award for Motor Panels (Coventry). This allows wide variations in commercial vehicle cabs to be made from many common parts. A normal control cab, special-purpose cab, crew cab, day cab and a sleeper cab can be made using a high proportion of common parts such as the door panels.
Vauxhall Motors has been commended by the Design Council for its prototype JJL midi-bus developed in association with Marshall of Cambridge (Engineering) Ltd. It is in fact the first purposedesigned bus body by Vauxhall Motors.
Britax (Dynasafe) got its award for a safe fuel tank drainer. It pumps fuel out of the tank of a vehicle into a totally enclosed mobile tank and includes an anti-flash device in the suction pipe to prevent static electricity build-up.
