THE FREIGHT Transport Association has called for modifications in goods vehicle rear lighting legislation and for amendments to EEC legislation, which could apply in the UK.
The initiative follows publication of the FTA's Vehicle Lighting Working 3arty report which states that "the )roliferation of lights and reflectors low required or permitted is neither otally effective nor readily understood )3/ other road users."
The FTA recommendations include he fitting of additional rear lights, :nown as outline markers, in line with tormal rear lamps rather than at the Lighest practical point called for in an :EC requirement not yet adopted in the JK. It further recommends that all vehicles should be fitted with rear reflectors to EEC standards to ensure visibility in the event of lamp failure. Vehicles with trailers or semi-trailers should display modified rear reflective marker boards showing total length to the nearest metre. Triangular reflectors on such vehicles should be dropped, as they are not widely understood, says the report.
Matched pairs rather than single high-intensity rear lights should be mandatory and reversing lights should be optional.
The working party believes that the lighting configurations it suggests will make obvious to other road users the presence and characteristics of heavy goods vehicles travelling in the dark.
