T0 simulate operating conditions for tyres, a new tyre test plant has been made by Heenan and Froude, Ltd., Worcester, for the Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd. Both companies contributed towards the development of the plant, which consists of a 60-in.-diameter drum capable of being motored at speeds up to the equivalent of 80 m.p.h. The maximum motoring power of the testing machine at this speed is 100 b.h.p.
Two tyres can be tested simultaneously, one on each side of the drum. Each tyre mounted on its wheel and axle is pressed onto the drum by a force which is applied through a large bell-crank lever. The force is produced by a small weight sliding on a steelyard, which is connected to the long arm of the bell-crank lever. In this way the exact load required can be easily obtained.
Tyres varying in diameter from 39 in. up to 54 in. can be accommodated on this machine, which is robust in construction in the interests of accuracy, minimum deflections under load and long life.
