DUILT by the Glasgow company of
Thermotank Ltd. for Esso Petroleum Co. Ltd, the very first road-going tanker with a 6,000-gal. capacity is now in operation in the UK. Featuring the Thermotank tapered-vessel principle the tanker has no cranked sections in the bottom plates and needs none of the attendant bracing around the changes of section found in a cranked design. This has enabled a substantial saving in unladen weight—claimed to be 4 tons 10 cwt.
Construction of the tank shell is in 0.25 in. NS6 aluminium plate by the tungsten-inert-gas process. The main stresses in the tank are carrier by top and bottom beams running the full length of the shell, inside which eight division bulkheads form stiffeners tying the two main beams together.
