THE USED trailer market is suffering from a shortage of fridges, believes Brian Parkinson, the general manager of Schmitz Cargobull [UK]'s used sales division, which is based in Warrington.
"There is a dearth of clean, tidy fridges coming back into the market.
"Operators are holding on to their trailers for an extra 12 months — fridges that should have been coming back in through [Schmitz's in-house finance division] Cargobull Finance haven't."
He continues: "If they have got a fiveyear-old fridge trailer, they are thinking to themselves: `Do we really want to send it back? We know it's been well looked after [under warranty and maintenance programmes], I know where I stand with it', so they are seeing how things are before they buy new stock."
But there is one major deal going through for 100 new fridge trailers via Schmitz Cargobull [UK] for a supermarket.
That said, the old fridge trailers won't be coming out of the deal and finding their way back on to the used market until January, after the Christmas deliveries, reveals Parkinson. •
