Ford's original Cargo was launched in 1981 to many plaudits and secured the Truck of the Year Award in 1982. Unusually for Ford at the time, the design travelled across the Atlantic to earn a place in the US model line-up until the acquisition of Ford's American Heavy Truck business by Daimler in 1997.
From then on the Cargo cab continued with Sterling and Freightliner badges.
Meanwhile, the cab was a mainstay of the Turkish transport scene in its guise as the Ford Otosan Cargo. An arrangement between Iveco and Ashok Leyland in 1987 saw the introduction of the Cargo to India, where the cab is still seen in its original form in addition to a heavily restyled version on the U Truck range.
The Cargo cab has recently been dusted off for use on the French Panhard TC 45 military 4x4 vehicle, and has featured on the Egyptian EAMCO Toshky Truck (pictured).
