A CUT of 10 per cent. in bus services r-k operated by Reading Corporation may be necessary to counteract falling revenue, Cllr. D. L. Stoddart, chairman of the transport committee, told the town council last week. He also announced that the depot at Bennet Road, Reading, which was completed only four years ago, was to be closed within the next five months, and buses would be garaged at Mill Lane.
Cllr, Stoddart was answering criticisms by Cllr. J. S. Woodrow. who had pointed out that financial returns for the 21 days ended April 24 showed a drop of £2,000 over the corresponding period last year. Income for the year had fallen from £31,300 to /29,900. he added, whereas expenditure had increased from £29,500 to £31,400.
CUL Stoddart said the transport committee had the position well in hand. They had disposed of some vehicles and might sell more, and off-peak services throughout the town would be adjusted. However, if a 10 per cent, cut in services were necessary, crews would he consulted.
He pointed out that a profit or foss could not be assessed over a 21-day period, but a trend could be shown.
