FACED with the bureaucratic procedures that might have prevented the Greater London Council from authorising 30 additional bus lanes by Christmas, GLC transport committee chairman Dave Wetzel, says he hatched what was known jokingly as the "Tplan".
If the bus lanes could not be created, he would have requisitioned sufficient tanks from the Ministry of Defence, and run them in front of the buses so that all other traffic would be pushed out of the way.
He thought his officers saw the joke, until one chipped in: "But, Sir, wouldn't that cause a lot of damage to the roads?"
"There would be me sitting in Wandsworth Prison, and all they were worried about was the state the roads would get in," quipped the bold Dave.
