Ltd and HP Foods Ltd, with responsibility for primary and secondary distribution of the companies' products. He joined the grocery trade in 1962 with General Foods, and has held transport posts with that company, Kraft, Pedigree Petfoods, and Mars.
Former North-Western BRS managing director IAN BLUNDELL, who resigned last year, has moved north of the border to become engineering director with the Scottish Freight Company. VICTOR ROSS, SFC's group personnel manager, is now personnel director.
Northern Ireland Carriers' personnel manager, STANLEY MARTIN, has retired after 49 years' service with the company and its predecessors. He began his career with the Great Northern Railway, in Dublin, and in 1958 joined the Ulster Transport Authority's staff office, where he became closely involved with the introduction of one-man operated buses. He became NIC staff officer in January 1965, and subsequently personnel manager. He helped form the Northern Ireland Road Transport Association, of which he is still secretary, and was awarded an MBE in 1980. He has been succeeded at NIC by BRIAN GRAY.
KEN MATTHEWS, former managing director of R. K. Crisp, of Birmingham, has joined Deryck A. Hartwell Ltd, of Evesham, where he will develop its intercontinental, heavy, and abnormal load activities.
Grampian Regional Transport has made WILLIAM COUPER its planning manager, in place of COLIN SMITH, who is now traffic manager. Mr Couper was latterly with Eastern Scottish as its assistant planning and development officer, with responsibility for the ScotMAP market analysis project, and before that was with Lothian Region Transport. MICHAEL HAYES, formerly chief engineer with Alexander (Northern), has become chief engineer with fellow Scottish Bus Group company Central SMT. He succeeds ROBERT McCRACKEN, who has retired after 20 years in the post. DAVID TOY, Brighton Borough Transport's chief engineer, has moved to Alexander (Northern) in place of Mr Hayes.
Three National Bus subsidiaries have new company secretaries. DOUGLAS ROSS has joined Bristol Omnibus Company from Avonwest Holdings, part of the Transport Development Group, and replaces BRIAN FRANCE, who is to become National Bus group accountant. GRAHAM MAYHEW moves from Hants and Dorset to Western National, replacing MARTIN BALLINGER. And GODFREY BURLEY is now Lincolnshire Road Car secretary in addition to East Yorkshire, reflecting the pan-Humberside role of the two companies.
PETER WHITAKER is now head of marketing at Seddon Atkinson, having been its sales manager for the last two years, He will be responsible for all sales, service, distributor and parts marketing activities.
Former York Trailer International managing director JIM DAVIES is now deputy managing director of York Trailer Holdings, but retains day-to-day responsibility for the international division.
Obituary We record with regret the deaths of TOBY TURNER and JIM BAIRD.
Mr Turner, who was 59, died on February 28 and was managing director of Thomas Allen and A. S. Jones until his premature retirement in 1978.
Mr Baird was co-founder and non-executive director of York Trailer Holdings, and was responsible for the development and introduction to Britain of the company's range of modern trailers, including chassis-less van trailers.
