He points out that when refitting a front hub it is sometimes difficult to push the outer taper roller race far enough on to the axle for the lock plate to locate on to the flats of the stub-axle. An old lock-plate with the centre turned out makes this job quite simple.
Put the hub and bearings on in the normal way, then the modified lock-plate, and screw the hub nut on as far as it will go. Having done this, adjust the brake until the wheel is tight and then remove the hub nut and lock-plate. The outer race is then on the axle far enough for the original lockplate to be fitted on to the flats of the axle quite easily.
Comments Handyman: This idea. although not new, is a good one and well worth using. I remember fun and games with thick oil felts, and this was a sure way of hitting the locating flats first time.
