THE following—entirely my own—may interest your readers: The cold start device on the BMC FGK 40 range is not its best feature, and I cannot understand why it has not been modified. The leverage necessary to work this is impossible to attain by pulling on a "choke"-type knob except in the first few weeks of its life.
I have modified several in my firm's fleet and these have all met with drivers' approval.
The cold start device is operated by an inner and outer cable, with a yoke end operating the "works".
The yoke end I drill out to AM., retaining the 2 B.A. setscrew. In place of cable I use din. mild steel rod, shaped as the sketch shows.
The front (or knob) end of the old outer cable, complete with the bracket, is retained as a guide and must be slipped in place on the rod before the loop at the front is made. The loop should be vertical as viewed from the front.
The hole in the grille must be made larger to allow the loop to pass, though in practice I merely cut away a little of the grille. By the way, it does not rattle, stick or break! LES TUXFORD, Derby
