• About 100 drivers' jobs are being put at risk by a new materials handling system being installed at BhS's national distribution centre at Atherstone, Warwickshire.
The system will be managed by NFC as part of its contract to handle all distribution to BhS and Mothercare stores. It will reduce stockholding time, mainly on hanging garments. But it means the Storehouse retail chains want to transfer their distribution work to Atherstoneresulting in the closure in 1996 of Mothercare's site at Wellingborough. Northants, where 97 drivers and 250 warehousemen and clerical staff are based.
NFC leases the Wellingborough site for Storehouse, but says it is looking for alternative work for the depot: if this fails, Storehouse will bear the cost of the 350 redundancies, says an NFC spokesman.
