EUROPEAN TRANSPORT Commissioner Jacques Barrot is to lead another EC bid to harmonise truck fuel duty rates across Europe.
Barrot told last week's EU Council of Transport Ministers that his officials were "currently preparing a proposal" setting maximum and minimum rates for diesel duty paid by hauliers.
He added that his staff were developing an "eventual proposal for a regulation" mandating "price review clauses in transport contracts in order to take into account variations in the price of fuel", but he admitted this was not imminent.
Geoff Dosseter of the Freight Transport Association says: "Ultimate harmonisation of tax rates or closer harmonisation would benefit the UK transport industry."
