AN option to buy the majority of the stock of Smithsons Holdings, the parent company of an organization operating about 2,000 haulage vehicles; has been taken by the Canadian Pacific Railway. Smithsons Holdings control Smith Transports and other companies, comprising one of the largest haulage undertakings in Eastern Canada.
An application to sell the stock has been made to the Quebec Transportation Board by Smith Transports H. Smith Transport, who operate mainly in Quebec Province, are excluded from the proposed deal.
Mr. N. R. Crump, president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, said that the company proposed to co-ordinate road and rail services under a common management. C.P.R. had been engaged for many years in road transport in Western Canada. The proposed deal would allow them to provide flexible services throughout their railway system.
