Drivers Among 73 Entrants
L"LIMINATING rounds for the Scottish Commercial Vehicle Driver of the Year Competition were held last Saturday, at Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
Twenty of the 73 vehicles entered at Edinburgh were owned by the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society, Ltd., who secured seven places in five classes. Others represented in the prize list were the nationalized industries, including British Road Services, but only One private-enterprise concern earned a place.
Squally weather was discouraging to spectators, and a strong wind frequently knocked down pylons, which made judging difficult.
Excellent performances were put up by competitors on the road section from Maybury to the Marine Gardens, but the written test on the Highway Code was a more serious matter for many drivers. It was stiffer than the examination last year, but one competitor scored 194 out of 20 marks and high figures were recorded by others. Nevertheless, the competition showed that there is need . for more diligent study of the Highway Code.
R. Mitchell, of the Scottish Cooperative Wholesale Society, in an E.R.F. (class D) put up a splendid show in the manoeuvring exercises, and, backed by an equally good performance in the road test and Highway Code examination, earned 984 marks out of 100.
R. Smith, also of the S.C.W.S., in an Austin, and James Robertson, of the ° Scottish Gas Board, in a Bedford, both scored 974 marks.
