IN SPITE of the Government's plan to allocate more cash to the National Bus Company and the National Freight Corporation, as reported in CM last week, 30 labour MPs have signed a Commons motion protesting at the proposed expenditure on roads.
The motion expresses dismay that spending — outlined in the White Paper. Public Spending to 1978/79 in each year on motorways and trunk roads will exceed the combined central Government subsidies on all forms of public transport.
The MPs called for a Commons Select Committee to be set up to investigate as a matter of urgency the economic and environmental consequences of this policy.
