• The maintenance contract for British Rail's 7,000 roadgoing vehicles is up for tender and Fleetcare, the current contract holder, has not been invited to pitch for the work.
The decision by the British Railways Board follows a series of raids made in 1984 by British Transport Police on 20 Fleetcare depots, which produced evidence that Fleetcare depot managers had overcharged British Rail.
Several prosecutions have taken place, in which former Fleetcare depot managers have been given suspended prison sentences and conditional discharges. During one such trial, at Leicester, prose curing counsel Anthony Hacking said: "It is the view of British Transport Police that overall losses for BR amount to several million pounds."
