THE NORTH-EASTERN Co-operative Society is fitting ultrasonic alarm systems supplied by Philips Service of Croydon, to its 80-strong fleet of service vehicles.
Each vehicle has been fitted with the Philips SBC1 7 5 ultrasonic vehicle alarm, which gives warning of any attempt to enter the vehicle.
The system is based on an ultrasonic transmitter/receiver that fills the driver's and the goods compartments with a continuous but inaudible signal, which is reflected off all internal surfaces.
Any change in the reflected pattern, for instance a moving hand, the breaking of a window or an attempt to force a door, will cause the vehicle's horn to produce a rapid, intermittent note.
All doors or entry points including boot and bonnet can be wired into the ultrasonic system, which retails at around £62.
