IT WAS, I suppose, inevitable that entertainers should attract more popular attention in the New Year's Honours List than a man who has wrought a quiet revolution in British industry, But no one deserved a knighthood more than Peter Thompson, chairman and chief executive of the National Freight Consortium and Businessman of the Year.
I was so certain that his vision, courage and determination would quickly be recognised by the Prime Minister that when I went on holiday in June, 1982, I took with me a letter of congratulation to Sir Peter so that I would post it at once, wherever I was, when I read the Birthday Honours List. I have had to wait another 18 months for that pleasure, during which time my admiration of him has increased steadily.
