• Thousands of SELNEC PTE bus passengers will be handed a leaflet in future weeks which is headed "This man is here to help you". It will introduce them to one of seven public relations-trained section inspectors each of whom will provide a full-time, on-the-spot, information service in his area.
The leaflets carry a photograph of the local inspector with the invitation to contact him at any time about travel matters. Distribution of the leaflets will be throughout two areas of Greater Manchester the Rochdale district of Northern Bus Company and the North West area of Central Bus Company. The success of a similar scheme in the southern area has prompted the introduction of the service in the two other areas of SELNEC.
A "flying squad" of six inspectors is also to cover five main corridors of the Central Bus Company's North West area, checking on consistent fare dodging and over-riding. They began last week and operate out of Salford. Where necessary, SELNEC's specially trained fraud squad, led by former Leigh policeman John Webb, will be called in to follow through on individual cases.
