I WAS interested to read your article headed "Overlength artics" last week, but I believe there are a few points that were not covered.
Firstly, there are a number of conversions available to add on a third lifting axle. Some of these pay no attention to wheel base alterations and are considerably longer than the factory vehicles.
Most new Scania and Daf tractive units are sold with sliding fifth wheels in order to be compatible with as many types of trailers as possible. However this places the responsibility of moving the plate on the driver when he changes from one type of trailer to another.
I think it is unfair to state that 19 vehicles were overlength without mentioning how many units were actually measured. What percentage of these were Scania and Daf units? After all, having discovered that it was lift axle units, which usually failed to comply, did the officer tend to concentrate on these vehicles in order to press home a point?
