HIGHER bus and tube fares, to start from June 23, have been announced by London Transport. The effect of this will be that London fares will generally be at the rate of 3d. a mile up to seven miles, instead of up to four miles at present, with a somewhat lower charge per mile for journeys of more than seven miles.
Additional revenue yield for London Transport is expected to be £24 m. in a full year.
In accordance with the 1962 Act, London Transport must make application to the Transport Tribunal within a month of the announcement of altera tion to its fares, and the Tribunal will then hold a public inquiry.
Some examples of the increased fares are:- Up to Is.— no change; the Is. 2d. fare goes up Id., the Is. 4d. fare goes up 2d.. the Is. 6d. and Is. Rd. fares go up 3d. and fares from Is. 10d. to 2s. 10d. go up 4d.
On Monday, London Transport applied to the Tribunal for powers to .make a surcharge on the fares of buses and Green Line coaches which it will run through the Dartford-Purfleet Tunnel. The proposed toll is 6s. a bus, the surcharge 6d. per passenger fare.
