• "Our aim is 100 per cent trade union membership in the commercial road transport industry in Scotland". This ambition is expressed by the Scottish Commercial Motormen's Union in the April issue of its official journal, The Highway.
The paper goes on to say that the decision to amalgamate with TGWU "has given us a unified base from which to fight and win the battle for total union organization in this industry of ours other sectors of the TGWU linked into transport will be committed in our support when this is tactically desirable and most effective. The massive strength of the TGWU will be used to seal the doors completely so far as commercial road transport is concerned."
The Highway says that the merger resulted in a new trade union in Scotland with a membership of around 35,000 "but there are 45,000 workers to be recruited to the industry, since the potential is about 80,000. We in Scotland can set the pace for trade unionism in commercial road transport throughout Britain where membership can be raised from 240,000 to around 600,000. We shall be the spearhead of this great drive."
