• An order for 10 special airside coaches with a passenger capacity of 100 has been placed with Portsmouth specialist coachbuilder J. H. Sparshatt and Sons Ltd by British Overseas Airways Corporation. This completes a £250,000 hat-trick for Sparshatts who gained an order for three special front-end-loading airside coaches based on AEC Swift chassis (CM February 19), also for use with BOAC, and 10 100-passenger coaches of similar design to the current order for British European Airways (CM April 9).
Principal differences on the BOAC jumbo coaches will be the fitting of a double doorway at the rear of the body instead of a pair of doors on the side, and the use of a single-step entrance in place of the shallow double steps to be employed on the BEA version. The tractive units for both airlines' vehicles will be Leyland Mastiff MS 2400 models, fitted with automatic transmission, supplied through Sparshatts.
