CCORDING to the "Transport PA and General Workers' Record," substantial increases in the wages of haulage workers have been agreed by the Road Haulage Central Wages Board. Although the wage increase is, in the main, ( tie of 4s. a week, changes that have been made in the classification of pay grades, result in far greater concessions to the workers.
Wages throughout the country are to be related to vehicle carrying capacity, and sub-divisions of wage rates will be uniform in each area. The class for vehicles over 5 tons haft been sub-divided into three, comprising the 5-8-ton category, 8-12 tons, and over 12 tons. The Metropolitan area and provincial districts have, in the past, worked on different bases.
Drivers of vehicles of 12 tons and over will receive an extra 12s. per week in London, and another I Is. in the provinces. Rates for drivers of vehicles over 8 tons have been advanced by 8s. in London and 7s. in the provinces. The lOwest adult rate for the London area js now £5 is. per week, instead of £4 9s. and £4 13s. under R.H. 22. In Grade I areas and on long-distance work, the lowest adult rate will be £4 16s., and in Grade II, £4 12s.
In future, workers engaged in the transport of milk will be covered by the provisions applying to road haulage workers.
