• Transport Minister Roger Freeman has launched initiatives to shift freight off roads when private firms are allowed to run their own train services next April.
British Rail will sell locomotives and wagons not needed by the new owners of its freight subsidiaries which are being privatised. This will allow private operators to reduce the cost and
delivery times for new equipment From the end of this month potential operators will be allowed to negotiate prices for using the network, and Railtrack, the body responsible for negotiating rates and maintaining track, will provisionally accept safety plans proposed by potential users, before its own plans are approved next February.
