• Heavy haulier John Golding may have to lay off drivers and sell some vehicles because a customer has switched to Continental hauliers to move silos.
Rotterdam haulier MultiWheels and a French operator have taken over deliveries to the Continent for Braby Silos— Golding has been handling the work for the past 30 years.
Golding recently asked for a 12% rate increase from Braby to cope with the November .£750 VED rise for Special Types, but his continental competitors are now under cutting the UK company's rates by as much as 40%.
"We're shattered here. We're supposed to be in the common market and compete with the Dutch Goldi
with our hands tied behind our back," says proprietor John Golding. He runs 11 vehicles from his Wotton-Under-Edge site.
Golding took around one silo a month to the Continent and also carries out UK deliveries for Braby. Now Braby site director John Baldwin warns he may also switch to continental hauliers for his UK transport if Golding persists with its rate rise.
