bidding to take over equipment transportation for the British armed forces. TNT had been advising Defence Logistics Solutions (DLS) for some time: now the other consortium members, BAE Systems and Westland Helicopters, have agreed to let it have a formal stake. No money has been paid.
The consortium has already been shortlisted for the contract, which will be awarded next summer. It will not include transport to trouble-spots like Iraq, which need to be handled by military personnel.
A spokesman for DLS says one of the key roles for whoever wins the contract will be to establish computer systems that will avoid the confusion that dogged military logistics during the Iraq war and take over the storage and distribution of most non-combat stores.
