The UK Vehicle Lighting Regulations state that only red reflective materials can be used on the rear of commercial vehicles. This is the standard UK colour of safety. Meanwhile, any colour except red can be used on the front of vehicles. This is to ensure that other vehicles can see that it is not the rear.
There is also a UN regulation (UN/ECE 104) that states that vehicles can have white OR red on the rear and amber on the sides. But the UK will dig its heels in over this, as it Is adamant that It should remain red only.
Vehicle conspicuity stripes are nine times more reflective than the average reflective advertising decals. Graphics materials manufacturer 3M currently uses Diamond Grade vehicle conspicuity.
Reflective liveries are generally taken on by high-profile fleets such as BT and Boots as a form of corporate identity. However, studies have concluded that the use of reflective materials does go some way to make the vehicle
safer on the roads. d
