After nearly two weeks of action French hauliers called off their blockades of oil refineries last weekend. They had won a 15% reduction in fuel taxes in the form of an essential user rebate.
Their protest followed a blockade of the Channel ports by French fishermen, who settled for concessions on social taxes and port costs on 31 August.
The TLF, which represents the larger French transport operators, won a 3.5p/lit (35 centime) reduction in fuel duty on 6 September. The French transport unions FNTR and UNOSTRA held out until last weekend when a fuel duty rebate of 15% was on the table.
It remains to be seen if the deal given by the French government contravenes EC regulations on competition.
