II The Irish Prime Minister was due to meet Irish hauliers yesterday (13 September) in a bid to halt countrywide protests on diesel prices.
Last week Irish Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy said he would not make any concessions on diesel excise duty until the December Budget. But Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern agreed to meet the Irish Road Haulage Association on Wednesday evening.
Militant hauliers outside of the Irish Road Haulage Association cancelled their individual protests and say they will follow the IRHA line on the dispute.
The IRHA has scheduled action for tomorrow and next Monday unless it receives a "satisfactory" response from the Irish government. It is demanding an immediate reduction of 20% (5p/lit) with further concessions in the December Budget.
