SPECIAL welding techniques had to be developed by engineers of the Primrose Group, Blackburn, Lancashire, to fight brittle fatigue in cold temperatures on a batch of five trailers destined for Russia.
The trailers are for pipeline-laying work and, according to Primrose, are capable of working in ambient temperatures ranging from —40°C to +40°C (-40°F to 104°F).
The three-axle drawbar trailers are 3.05m (10ft) wide and 11.4m (37ft Gin) long and will carry containerised generator sets to be used for the welding of pipelines.
Designed to be used at up to 39-tons gross even on cross-country work, the trailers have been MIRA-tested for stability at speed and off-road work to demonstrate that they can operate at angles up to 20° with the generator container fitted.
