LONDON TRANSPORT and Greater Manchester Transport are tackling opposite ends of the age-scle in promoting leisure travel. London area pensioners are being wooed by the issue of the Golden Rover, half-price ticket, first introduced in the spring, for the rest of the year. For £1.25 it is possible to travel anywhere on London Country and Green Line routes.
Determined to get more than their money's worth, many tough old souls are, according to London Country's commercial manager Bernard Davis, "happily travelling 100 miles or more in a day, changing buses up to half-a-dozen times."
Greater Manchester Transport, in association with the Countryside Commission, is enrolling children, mainly of 11 to 16 years, in the Adventure Rider Club to encourage interest in the countryside as well as to increase revenue. On joining, each child receives an adventure pack containing membership card, badge, introductory letter, code of conduct and an initial series of adventure trail guides.
Les Lumsdon, recreational transport officer, is doing a highly professional job of organising and obviously understands children. I hope parents can afford to send their offspring on these adventures.
