TRANSPORT Minister William Rodgers last week refused to change his policy of giving no subsidy for rail freight.
He had been urged to do so by Bob Cryer (Labour, Keighley) who told him that we carried the lowest amount of freight by rail in the EEC.
Mr Cryer said that grants under Section 8 of the 1974 Railways Act, for example, were not enough to redress the drift of freight from the railways. He urged that dangerous cargoes, such as those from Flixborough, should be carried by rail.
