IN EXCHANGE for publicity for Courage's lager on London Regional Transport, the brewer is to pay for bus and train services to be run free of charge in London between llpm and 4am on New Year's Eve. It is hoped that revellers will be encouraged not to drive that night.
Bus passengers have been carried free also in Southampton and Northampton but not through the altruism of the operators. Crews refused to collect fares in protest against the Government's plans to sell the services to private operators. The protest was selfdefeating because those who rode free must have thought that the process known to philistines as "privatisation" was just the ticket.
In Sussex the Phoenix Brewery has arranged for customers to be taken home by taxi from 500 pubs at Christmas. They are guaranteed a cab within 20 minutes of calling for one, which will give nice time for one more for the road.
