PLANS FOR A il()Om Bath bypass are out for public consultation.

Richard Rawlinson, Bath and North East Somerset Council's head of transport and highways, says an A467A36 link across the Avon valley could he built within 10 years.

The proposal is included in the recently completed Greater Bristol Strategic Transportation Study (GBSTS). "It is a sensitive issue for the council in the area, but it is a strategic road scheme:" he explains.

At present, trucks are forced to head through Bath and across the city's heavily congested Cleveland Bridge. The council is also consulting on plans to restrict the movement of trucks through the historic city.

Ian Gallagher, the Freight Transport Association's policy manager for the South West, says that as trucks only account for 3% of the traffic through Bath, the road transport industry is more a victim than a cause of congestion.

Gallagher believes that a link road could cut 20 minutes from the current travelling time.

Mike Ham, business development manager at Chilcompton, Somerset operator Massey Wilcox Transportsays:"There needs to be a road that runs between Bath and Bristol which gives you access to both, but doesn't take you through them. We would support that."
