TA votes to scrap RTITB

by David Lowe • Transport Association members at their meeting in London on Tuesday voted unanimously during their private business session for the winding up of the RTITB.
The session was addressed by Mr Robert Taylor MP who is a supporter of the Commons motion to bring training boards and their shortcomings to the 'attention of the House.
Mr Taylor is reported to have told the TA that the transport industry should be left to look after its own training. One member asked: "Who is the board to show people how to run a business when they are up to £6m in the red themselves?"
Mr Taylor said that he was supporting a prayer put down on the order paper in the Commons in the name of .Mr Marcus Fox MP to annul the statutory instrument which annually confirms the RTITB's levy powers (CM December 25). A debate on the subject was likely within the next fortnight. (See also page 24).
There was controversy at the luncheon as to how much haulage rates should be increased by, but agreement that the amount should be substantial. One member had calculated 15.4 pc cost increases over the past year without the latest fuel price rise.
