Drop-sided Body Weigh 8 cwt.
THE use of light-alloy fittings has enabled the Eagle Engineering Co., Ltd.. Warwick, to reduce to 8 cwt. the weight of a wooden body 16 ft. 8 in. long. The body is fitted to an Austin 5-ton forward-control petrol-engined chassis, the unladen weight of the vehicle being under 2 tons 17 cwt.
John Perks and Son (Forgings), Ltd., Lye, Stourbridge, supplied the lightalloy parts, which 'comprise detachable centre and corner posts, hinge members and eyes, cappings and so on. The corner posts and sockets are of extruded angle section and the centre posts are of shallow T section, developed by the concern. The weight of the parts is about a third that of their steel counterparts, and they combine an equal strength with a high resistance to corrosion.
The flooring, sides and tailboard are of fin. Swedish white deal and the sub-frame is constructed of hardwood.
