Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Reports appearing in last week's trade press that several truck manufacturers are now lobbying to have the VED rebate scheme for clean-burn engines scrapped will not only damage their own reputations but will also harm our industry as a whole. No wonder none of those involved is willing to be named and—as would undoubtedly be the case— shamed by such an admission.

The spectre of commercial vehicle suppliers whose products fail to meet the standards laid down by Government now calling for retrograde environmental steps to be taken is quite simply unpalatable.

The fact that, as of the time of writing. Scania is the only

manufacturer whose engines fulfil the Reduced Pollution Certificate criteria without the need for after-treatment bears testimony to our long and sustained development programme aimed at providing cleaner burning power units.

That's nothing new—our stated policy has always been to deliver the best possible transport economy supported by the best possible environmental solution.

As a result, while recognising the benefits that can be gained from exhaust after-treatment, Scania has chosen primarily to direct its efforts towards building engines that are cleaner burning in the first place.

Events of the past few weeks have vindicated that stance. We now look forward to continuing to supply operators with highly efficient trucks that are recognised to have the minimum impact upon our environment—and I urge other manufacturers to share that ambition rather than fight against it.
