A JUDGE LAST week halted the trial of a truck driver accused of causing the death of three people and instructed the jury to return not-guilty verdicts.
The case at Bristol Crown Court collapsed because Judge Simon Darwall-Smith said there was no evidence that Paul Smith realised his load had come loose.
The deaths were caused when Smith's load hit the edge of a bridge on the M4 near Bristol and caused two cars behind to crash.
James Kennedy. 50, from London; Beverly Toombs, 20, from Cardiff; and Thomas Fisher, 60, from Newport all died in the accident in March last year.
Smith, of Cayton, near Scarborough, North Yorkshire, had denied three counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
