Although no government financial assistance is available spectfically for the haulage sector, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) provides access to a number of loan and equity finance schemes for small and medium size businesses (SMEs). These include: • Small Firms Loan Guarantee Scheme, under which firms can apply for loans through banks with the government standing as guarantor • The Enterprise Fund, a £180m pot designed to provide loan and equity finance for SMEs • The Regional Venture Capital Fund, available in different areas of Britain, under which the government and other investors contribute to SMEs which are judged to be capable of growth
