• Male truck drivers who whip off their shirts—not always a pretty sight—at the first sign of hot weather would be well advised not to, says the Heath and Safety Executive (IISE), Getting a tan while roping and sheeting a load in the glare of the noonday sun might seem a good Idea, but the result is likely to be serious skin damage—such as sunburn and blistering—and an increased longterm risk of skin cancer.
Instead, the HSE advises workers out in the open air to wear long sleeved shirts and hats with a wide brim, and to stay in the shade when they take a break.
It has produced a free guidance leaflet for employers and employees called keep your top on.
