Distortion Preventing and Heat Conducting among Chief Attractions of Dickson All-metal Gasket.
-40111POSED solely of metal lamina...firms, a gasket named the Dickson, id handled by Howard Clayton'right, Ltd., Tiddington Road, Stratrd-on-Avon, appears to possess a imber of valuable attractions. Outanding among these are its heat conictivity and the fact that it minimizes stoat ion.
Precision made, Dickson gaskets are exactly uniform thickness, and though hard enough to resist pressure ,thout deformation—in the case of a iinder-head joint, for example, when e nuts are pulled down—they possess measure of elasticity sufficient to ake a perfect joint between faces not entirely free from irregularities. Moreover, it is stated that they retain this last-named characteristic indefinitely so that their function is unaffected by repeated temperature changes.
Because of the all-metal construction they constitute no interference to the flow of heat between the parts they separate. The choice of metal employed depends upon the application—copper, aluminium and coated steel are utilized—also the thickness can be exactly to specification. Where exposed to combustion, the edges of the laminations are protected by turning over the lowest sheet, so that its flange or extended and bent-over por
tion fully embraces all the other edges. To compensate for the thicknesfe of the turned-over piece, one of the inner laminations is cut back around the aperture, that above it being pressed down into the space thus formed.
In the case of a water hole, a separate piece is inserted to serve the same purpose, and two inner laminations are cut back to accommodate it.
We understand that the gasket metal " itself does not yield under the pressure of the joint faces, because this is insufficient, being less, actually, than is customarily required to make a perfect seal with an asbestos-type gasket. The elasticity, it is claimed, is afforded by the presence of air between the laminations. It is explained that this is not squeezed out but compressed. and expands again as the pressure lessens.
According to other claims, the Dickson gasket is leakproof and durable.
