pay round, the Road Haulage Association will try and settle an agreement which reflects its "appreciation of the patience with which lorry drivers have met past wage settlements," says the RHA's Midlands representative Bob Ward. Dennis Mills, Midland officer for the TGWU, wants his 30,000 members to get a "substantial increase" in the pay talks, although a set figure has yet to be put forward to the RHA. Mills says: "The road haulage industry has enjoyed a honeymoon during the recession. Now distribution must be paid for. Rates have fallen behind other jobs and safety standards have dropped. It is time lorry drivers get what they deserve."
