Driving jobs are being created by the launch of a major rail freight
terminal in Staffordshire. Guy Sheppard reports.
DOZENS OF DRIVING jobs are to be created by Roadways Container Logistics (RCL) when it opens a huge rail-freight terminal in the spring.
The 25-acre site alongside M421 J10 near Tamworth is being developed to cope with the rapid growth in containerised goods arriving in the UK.
RCL marketing director John Hooper says some of the work handled by its two sites in Birmingham will be transferred to the new site, which will be called Birmingham Intermodal Freight Terminal (BIFT).
But he has ruled out any loss of business at the company's railconnected sites in Barking, Manchester, Leeds and Coatbridge near Glasgow. —The growth that is still being predicted for container movements is quite phenomenal over the next few years therefore you need new facilities," Hooper explains. "Birmingham is a hub area for regional distribution centres which is why we were anxious to get a facility in that part of the world."
RCL employs more than 600 people and operates 280 trucks. Earlier this year its parent, Royal P&O Nedlloyd,merged with Danish shipping and logistics giant AP Moeller-Maersk (CM 19 May).
Hooper says the development of BIFT is not connected with any potential rationalisation following the merger: "This development has been on the cards for a number of years. It is not just for our own operation it is expected to be a common user facility that any train operator can use."
He adds that a manager of the site has already been appointed while the bulk of the staff recruitment is scheduled to take place early in the new year.
