Ltd. These are claimed to overcome the
difficulty with conventional p.v.e. pastes and coating methods of obtaining good adhesion on smooth surfaces. Two types have been developed: a one-coat system in which a special adhesive is mixed with the paste before application, and a primer-plus-paste system using a specially developed primer.
In each case, an excellent bond is said to be obtained between the paste and the material to be coated, and as this bond is chemical in nature it is extremely tenacious and resistant to many common solvents. For example, steel or aluminium sheet coated with Welvic paste can be formed and bent without damage to the coating or the p.v.c./metal bond.
The new pastes are applied to give fairly heavy coatings (up to 0-030 in. thick), the choice of type depending on the article to be coated and the method to be used. One-coat Welvic pastes can be applied by roller or by spraying, whilst the primer-plus-paste system is less economical by roller and unlike the onecoat system is also suitable for dip-bath coating. It can also be applied by spray.
